Dark Undertakings
Fifty-five-year-old Jim Lapsford makes an unusually healthy-looking corpse. A life-long devotee of vitamin pills and herbal remedies, it seems almost ironic that he has succumbed to a heart attack. But trainee undertaker Drew Slocombe is not so sure.
'Dark Undertakings' arose directly from my own experience of working at an undertaker's in Sussex, England. During my seven years there, I saw many instances of potential foul play, where the regulations, although strictly adhered to, were no guarantee at all that the death was natural. The novel is therefore a 'What if...' exercise. Suppose a body was found in his own bed, with no signs of violence...an obvious case of heart failure. Obviously....
